The XMage project is mainly affected by the copyright surrounding the Magic The Gathering game. In order to circumvent the legal issues coming with adding the images and packing them with the game, they were left out of the XMage project. Instead a download feature was implemented from which the images could be downloaded from an external source, leaving XMage out of the way of any potential copyright infringement.Solutions less pressing on the players of the game were suggested and discussed but like all discussions [10] they came down to the copyright infringement problem.

In order to make use of the XMage project the user has to start up the XMage client to interact with the user interface. If the user wants to participate in magic the gathering games he has to join a XMage server. At the moment XMage provides several servers which any user can join after creating an account. When the user has logged into the server he/she is able to start a MTG game or tournament and the user will also be able to configure any relevant properties. From this screen the user is also able to chat with the other users on the server. The user interface also provides several other options like the preference menu where the user can change all kind of properties of the interface of the XMage client. The user can also interact with the system by creating or modifying his/her MTG decks by clicking on the deck editor tab and in order to view the actual cards themselves the user can click on the Viewer tab. Because of regulation issues the client does not provide the image and symbol resources from the start, however the user can download these resources themselves by using the symbols and images tabs in the user interface. These are the most common ways the default user interacts with the system in order to make use of the XMage project.
The requirements to run XMage are almost identical to Forge. That is, it needs a JRE to run and the user experience is much better with a larger screen than what you would get using a tiny laptop / tablet. However, contrary to Forge, you should plan on saving a long time for the XMage initial setup because it takes multiple hours for it to finish downloading all the missing images.
First, select Symbols and follow instructions to download such image files. When done, select Images, then Standard download and optionally, you might configure options different than default but I suggest to use defaults, and then hit Start downloading.
When available, card profiles now include a link to download a full-resolution PNG image with rounded corners and transparent edges. These images are designed for tasks that need the best quality assets, such as videos and promotional art.

The problem is you have many small images. Every single image needs to download with an HTTP call with all headers and delays. so it cause having many HTTP requests for small amount of data. The best practice is having an image sprite to lower your delay of loading images. With having image sprite you just call server for small images once and get all images.

But Mage is, essentially, a full MTGO client, which enables drafting any format - including all cubes - where you'll always find someone to play any given format. Downloading 20.000 card images for that to run is not unheard of. In addition, you don't actually need to download the images, if you're fine with playing with placeholder card shapes that have names and mana cost on them and reveal details on hover. 2ff7e9595c
