Specifically, for Plugable (and other major brands), the new driver architecture caused compatibility issues with USB Ethernet adapters featuring the ASIX AX88179 chipset used in our USB3-E1000 and USBC-E1000 adapters, among others. While we take their plug and play functionality for granted, Ethernet drivers are complex, and building stable, performant drivers on the new DEXT architecture and the requisite new code signing process, was not a trivial task.

(Please note, these drivers have only been tested by Plugable with the USB3-E1000 and USBC-E1000 adapters that we manufacture. If you have an adapter from another manufacturer and encounter issues with this driver, we recommend reaching out to them if you encounter any issues, though we encourage people to leave comments about their experiences below for the benefit of others.)

Are Ethernet Adapters from other brands affected by this OS update?Yes, all brands of USB Ethernet Adapters that use ASIX chips and drivers are affected. This includes Amazon, Anker, Dell, Uni, UGREEN, Cable Matters, etc. Regardless of brand, if the adapter uses ASIX USB to Ethernet technology that requires external driver installation for a network connection, it will no longer function as expected after updating to macOS 11 without a DEXT Driver Extension as ASIX has provided.

Is this a temporary or permanent situation? We expect that with the new DEXT driver solution, there should be minimal impact on the utilization of ASIX AX88179-based Ethernet adapters going forward. In addition, this driver package should remain long-term functional outside of any behaviors potentially introduced via a macOS update.

Are there any other options to add a wired network connection to my macOS 11 system?Yes! Wired Ethernet solutions utilizing common Realtek ICs are fully functional as they rely on drivers built into the OS and require no further installation from an end-user.

I have an ESXi v6.7 deployment on a Dell Optiplex 7040 hardware with one onboard NIC. I want to enable a 2nd NIC and have obtained a USB attached Ethernet adapter to that end. The device comes with a CD containing the needed driver files (with .c and .h extensions) with a makefile provided for compilation:

What you should do is apply a USB connector to get you associated with the web first as this device will check your framework and after that download any Intel drivers that are missing or require refreshing. USB organize connectors can be purchased inexpensively on the off chance that you don't have one as of now.

I did already purchase and connect the adapter to my vSphere v6.7 system. The adapter appears to be the ASIX version AX88772. Any drivers I could locate are the ASIX version 88179 driver. After some perusal of related sites on this I did find what looked like an ASIX compatible vib file which I loaded into my ESXi environment. The system did after that recognize via the lsusb command the new adapter:

So I recently got gigabit internet speeds on Ethernet, but I use a laptop and I wanted to utilize my gigabit speeds so i fished out my USB to Ethernet adapter, and wired everything up. When i plugged it in for the first time the driver installation things popped up and it all looked dandy. The light on the adapter started to flash green as well.

In my network adapters it was saying that an Ethernet cable wasn't plugged in. I have tried 5 different Ethernet cables, so it isn't the cable. In the device manager, the drivers are up to date and it said the device was working properly.

When the external adapter was plugged in, we could try to disable the built-in network adapter from the device manager to have a troubleshoot. Try to reinstall the driver for the external device. For a network issue, we could try to run the built-in troubleshoot tool to have a diagnostic.Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories\Network Adapter

This adapter works, but it (probably) requires a bit of work. The driver for the chipset (Asix AX88178) included with the Raspbian kernel (v 3.1.9+ Aug 7 2012) does not work. With that driver the device is detected, but it does not seem to be possible to actually put any traffic through it. :-( In order to make it work you need to download the latest driver from the chipset manufacturer. The version I used was "Linux kernel 3.x/2.6.x Driver" v4.4.0, released 2012-05-18. Fortunately this is GNU GPLv2 -licenced source code and not a binary blob, so compiling it for the Raspberry Pi is perfectly doable. The hardest part was in fact getting the Linux source code required, because the repositores contained the source for the wrong kernel version. >:-( Fortunately there is a very useful guide for how to get the sources from github, and preparing that source so that you can compile modules. Unfortunately you will have to compile the kernel (even if you don't actually install it) - which will take the better part of the day on the Raspberry, but once that's done you can unpack the driver source and just run "make && sudo make install". Reboot and you should have a fully working Ethernet adapter.

You can start downloading the Manhattan Ethernet adapter Driver on ASIX AX88772 series for Manhattan USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet (506731) lan / network card.To start download file, click green download button on page below. We advise you to use a variety of download managers like FlashGet or Download Master. Also, you can go back to the list of drivers and choose a different driver for Manhattan USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet (506731) LAN / Network card.

Update: All atolla Network interface Adapter doesn't require manual installation of driver. It is completely plug & play. If you still encounter driver issue, please contact the support team.

But don't be panic when you find you don't have the driver. The atolla team has integrated the NIC driver directly into the product before we ship the products. So in most cases, when you plug in CH-301, it will install the driver automatically.

Hi,You need check developer ID (An example based on ASIX ELECTRONICS CORPORATION) Install driver and check if it exists kext in: /Library/Extensions/AX88179178A.kext In terminal: sudo su - (type your password)In terminal install kext:/usr/sbin/spctl -a -vv -t install /Library/Extensions/AX88179178A.kext You see:/Library/Extensions/AX88179_178A.kext: acceptedsource=Notarized Developer IDorigin=Developer ID Application: ASIX ELECTRONICS CORPORATION (5RHFAZ9D4P)3. Next boot MacBook in recovery mode4. In Terminal add developer ID: /usr/sbin/spctl kext-consent add 5RHFAZ9D4P5. Start MacOs X and accept pop up in system preferences/security and privacy.6. In terminal check added developer ID: /usr/sbin/spctl kext-consent listYou see:Allowed Team Identifiers:5RHFAZ9D4P7. Amazon Super Saver shipping can take up to eight business days, so giving an extra day or two for people to install the driver yields a takedown date of December 23, 2012. After that point, Plugable will not be able to distribute this driver to you.

We at Plugable really like our Surface (this post was written on one), and think that supporting third-party device drivers could make it even more useful. We hope that Microsoft and ASIX can find a way to bring back official driver support for the Plugable USB2-E100 Ethernet adapter soon. If you want to get word to Microsoft, the Surface Community Forums are one good way.

DO NOT UPGRADE to 8.1 PREVEIW. If you are using this driver it is not digitally signed in the Windows RT 8.1 Preview and it disables the device. If anyone knows how to disable the signing check please post!

Rumors are that Ethernet is coming to Windows RT. However the MS site right now says that the Surface Ethernet Adapter does work with 8.1. This is not true, it does not. -ca/support/hardware-and-drivers/usb-to-ethernet-adapter

I have officially confirmed that Windows RT 8.1 has built-in drivers for ASIX 88772C and RealTek (Surface Ethernet Adapter) and they work. Not automatically, but if you plug in your adapter and manually select the appropriate driver you will be good to go.

Following some good tutorials here and here, I started an attempt to port the freely available Linux drivers from Aquantia. This was not an easy task, as VMware does not document all that well how to setup the environment for building up things. After a while, with a proper configured CentOS environment, I started the process. 2ff7e9595c
